30 MUSCLE & FITNESS JUNE 2016

EVERY WINTER I STRUGGLE
to maintain motivation with my
training and I know I’m not the only
one. The morning is the toughest –
the cold air makes me want to do
nothing! I’ve also been guilty of doing
the same old fitness routines day in
day out. But this winter, I’ve decided
to try something new. And why not?
I thought it was about time I opened
up my mind and body to the idea of
brand new ways to get the results
that had begun to fall by the wayside
as my body became used to the daily
run. The benefits of expanding your
fitness repertoire are endless.

WEIGHT TRAINING
Weight training is not my favourite
thing, but I’m learning to truly
embrace it as I get older.
Trainer Lucy Francis from
BeachFit Bondi explains: “As we
get older our metabolism slows
down. Weight training allows us to
rev that metabolism a notch higher
in ways that cardio training can only
dream of, long after the workout
is over. It’s very beneficial for the
over 30s and a surefire way to truly
transform your body shape. Other

plusfactorsincludeapositiveeffect
on bone density levels (particularly
for women), and an increase in lean
muscle formation.”

CARDIO
Early morning runs are tough to
get enthused about but the benefits
of cardio still make it a winner.
In terms of calorie consumption
versus calorie burn, cardio is
a great option. Cardio also has
theaddedbenefitofreleasing
endorphins, the happy hormone

decreases appetite. Also, a healthy

functional training, including
stations that offer conditioning
and strength training in a group
environment. Fun, fast and intense,
this workout is exactly what
I need to tone, shape and build my
strength. f45training.com.au

  1. Aerial Flow Yoga
Find your inner sense of play
as you use a soft fabric swing
    that’s hanging from the ceiling
    to manoeuvre your way through
    various yoga stretches and poses.
    More challenging than you might
expect, but a great way to offer
your body a new way to play. Also
    awesome for lengthening the spine
    and realigning your whole body.

  2. ZUU
This technique of moving your body
is intense and interesting. Based on
    high intensity primal movement, ZUU
will have you sweating up a storm
as you go through endurance, body
    weight and strength patterns to
target all major and minor muscle
groups. If you want to try something
completely different, this is for you!
