Email –Yoga magazines off-putting

Yet again I pick up a yoga magazine for interest and inspiration,
but end up disappointed. As a yoga teacher, I do get these benefi ts,
but am annoyed that such extreme poses are prolifi c in these
publications. After 20 years of yoga practice I can’t achieve most of
these poses, as depicted, so it’s no wonder yoga newbies or want-
to-be’s get put off! Why not demonstrate more ‘modest versions’
of poses, with extreme options, rather than the other way around.
People who are contemplating learning may actually believe they
can achieve something in yoga if it looks realistic for the average
person’s abilities! So many people I meet say they would like to do
yoga, but aren’t fl exible enough. No wonder, when magazines
promoting yoga are full of people doing outrageous things! Issue
50 e.g. pg 75 - the average person wouldn’t even contemplate
trying this, whereas pg 76 looks achievable. Less is more inspiring.
Like New Beginnings by Grace Flowers, pg 83. – Vivienne

I hear you, Vivienne. I’m a teacher too, and have been practicing for
13 years but can’t even nearly do a lot of yoga poses displayed in yoga
magazines and on social media. I can definitely see how this can be
intimidating for many students. For those students who are a little (or a
lot) more limber (maybe they were gymnasts as kids), I think some of
these variations can be really inspiring and just what they need to move
a little deeper. I think you will like this issue though! Check out
Carrie-Anne’s sequence on page 36. I hope to continue to allow people to
see that yoga is not just about what you ‘achieve’ on your mat and to be
present and content with wherever they may be in their practice. - Ed
