FINDING stillness

EVERYTHING FEELS SLOWER IN WINTER.
We bunker down and cuddle up,
protecting ourselves from the crisp air.
We spend more time indoors and make
fewer plans for the weekends, but do
we really slow down?
When we give ourselves permission
to be still, we create space for ‘stuff’ to
come up. All of the stuff we’ve been
burying beneath our busyness. Maybe
this manifests as physical illness or
emotional overwhelm. And so to avoid
the discomfort of really feeling, we add
another thing to the ‘to-do’ list. We
make a new goal, start a new project,
go for a run, buy something or distract
ourselves with technology.
In a culture that encourages over-
consumption, we have too much of
what we don’t need and not enough
of what we do. It’s very easy to be

influenced by our environment of
social norms and get caught up in a
never-ending cycle of chasing our tails.
But what would happen if we simplified?
What would happen if we slowed down?
What I love about print media is that
it is tactile; it encourages you to take a
moment away from your device and the
digital world, have a cup of tea and chill.
I hope this allows you some time to
simply be.
Indulge in these moments this
winter. Simplify. Slow down. This is the
perfect time for it. Learn from the true
yogis who are walking their talk, like
the delightful Carrie-Anne who I had
the pleasure to spend some time with
(Profile p36), take your practice down a
notch with her restorative/yin sequence
(p37), learn to embrace a simpler life
(p40) and be present with and connect
to those around you (All Together Now
p58). Allow yourself to feel whatever
comes up, be at peace with it and watch
it pass by like a cloud softly floating in
the winter sky.
