SALES GAME
AUSTRALIA’S new-4x4
and SUV market has gone
gangbusters, to within
17,000 units of catching
passenger car sales
volumes. To the end of
May, 193,317 passenger
cars were sold against
176,382 SUVs and 4x4s.
In the dual-range 4WD ute market, the Ford Ranger is just 310 sales
behind the Toyota HiLux in year-to-date sales to the end of May. If the
Ranger has a few more cracking months, as it did in January (313 sales
more than HiLux), it will overtake its rival and it would be the first time
HiLux has not been the top-selling 4WD in 11 years.
A vehicle that has slowly fallen down the sales ladder is the Jeep
Grand Cherokee. Gone are the heady days of 2014 when it was the
highest-selling large 4x4 wagon with a 15 per cent chunk of the
segment. To the end of May this year, the Grand Cherokee is tracking at
just 6.7 per cent of its large SUV segment.
