I

need to apologise up front for this letter because I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a
hodge-podge of half-baked ideas. I have about two hours to send this issue to print
and still need to settle the cover (what do you think of turquoise?) The problems
started last night, when the laptop I’d ingeniously rehabilitated with a USB keyboard
ate the previous version (which I’d tweaked until it was firm in the centre and
springy on top, to milk the analogy). Despite how this might sound, I’m not asking
for sympathy but putting my name to apparent misfortunes I could pass off as
fate and declaring that we, friend, are now suffering the fallouts from my self-sabotage.
(Procrastinating until the 11th hour, check. Avoiding having the PC repaired, check. Failing to
make a to-do list? Ung.) I don’t mean to drag you into my inner chaos, but I’m airing my dirty
behavioural laundry because it segues delightfully to the content in the fitness issue. Nothing
is more vulnerable to self-induced pseudo failure than fitness (which is sagely summarised
by cover model Amy Jo Palmquest as ‘a state of mind and body working together and making
conscious decisions to choose health’). While experts don’t quite understand the quirk of the
human condition that makes us put things between ourselves and what we think we want,
the psych brigade’s all over solutions (see p. 112). Since physical fitness is so reliant on mental
order, we’ve paired The Fitness Warrior’s four-week body plan (p. 66) and Janine Horsley’s butt
lift workout (p. 78) with prudent mental training (don’t miss the feature on how viewing your
favourite food porn can make it impossible to stick to your meal plan, p. 92, or the distinctly
unsabotagey chocolate pronuts on p. 87). If you’re still drawing a blank on the sabotage thing,
congrats on not contributing to your own unsuccess. Since you’ve got time to spare, humour
me by trying the breathing technique that inhibits stress responses (p. 46) and get back to me
on whether you’ve been needlessly harried. I’ll still be here, writing November’s letter so we
don’t face a similar hodge-podge in four weeks’ time.

Wishing you an unimpeded month,
