HOWCANIHELPAFRIEND?
IF YOU THINK SOMEONE CLOSE TO YOU IS IN AN
ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP, PSYCHOLOGIST CARMEL
O’BRIENSUGGESTS THE BELOW:

If you believe someone’s safety is at
immediate risk, call Triple 0 and follow
their instructions. Whatever you do, do
not put yourself or your friend at risk.

If you’re worried about someone, ask a
general question when they’re not with their
partner,like,“Howarethingsathome?”Or
oer some support like, “If you ever need
anything, let me know”. Your kindness will
be remembered, and will be an antidote to
the abuse.

If they confide in you, listen to them, and
believe them. Being believed and not judged
is more powerful than you can imagine.

Tell them they are not to blame for the
violence and abuse and see if they need help
getting any information that will assist them.
You can even oer to ring 1800RESPECT
on their behalf, or be there for them if they
decide to seek help this way.
