It’s black and white Extensive
water damage meant walls had to be
replastered and painted. Alex and
Dominic rolled up their sleeves and
painted the walls throughout in Dulux
“Vivid White” to create a greater
contrast with the dark floors. There
were no window treatments, so they
added plantation shutters to the
space. The Indivi custom-sized sofa
is from BoConcept. The Eames
fibreglass rocker is from Spence &
Lyda. On the wall hangs Jannali
“Moon” by Astella Designs.

Ollie sit! Alex and Ollie, a pug x cavalier
King Charles spaniel, in the bright, white
hallway. The colour, in keeping with the
rest of the house, adds a contemporary
touch while the original hallway arch brings
character. The simple, neutral palette
allows a few key pieces – such as the
mirror above the fireplace – to stand out.

ALEX GILMOUR FAVOURED A CLASSIC, traditional-style home, while her husband Dominic
Chong wanted something more modern. So the three-bedroom, split-level semi, which the
designers and founders of Evie Group, found in Sydney’s Lilyfield six years ago needed some
fine-tuning to suit their respective wants. The early-1900s house still had Victorian-style features

  • such as pressed metal ceilings, original doors and fireplaces – while the previous owners had
added a third bedroom downstairs; this was cut into the building’s sandstone foundations.
Key to injecting a modern element in the home was the colour palette – black and white is the
go-to combination for designers for a reason. It helps keep the space in balance and provides a
backdrop for hero pieces. Black and white also works well in both traditional and contemporary
spaces, so was a good compromise for the couple. Walls were painted in Dulux “Vivid White”,
and upstairs, floors were stained in Black Japan, which helps to ground the high ceilings.
The couple are inspired by Scandi design and American modernisn, with their home a lesson
in clean lines and sleek spaces. “We like simple things and don’t like clutter,” Alex explains. A
