1 HOME ON THE RANGE Like a hacienda from your dreams, this inviting cabin

in the south Californian desert has a bohemian, artisanal feel, with its handwoven floor

rug, macrame hanging and tree stump as impromptu side table. Together with the sun-

bleached timbers and concrete floors, it has an earthy tactility, further enhanced by

the neutral colour palette of rust, sand, bone white and concrete grey. “We created

this space to embrace the thoughts and feelings of a bygone era represented by the

original homestead cabins of Joshua Tree,” says the owner. “It features modern desert

bohemian furniture... with handmade artefacts, art and accessories.”

2 WELL HUNG Though the building is thoroughly modern, everything inside this cabin

has an improvised quality. Artwork is pegged up like a cowboy’s long johns while the

pendant lights above the bed have a hand-forged feel – there’s nothing too slick or over-

thought here. The bedding, with its Navajo-print cushion and pompom trimmings, picks

up on the crafty themes explored throughout the cabin. Meanwhile, the sheepskin pillow,

like the shaggy hides in the living area, nods to the rustic homestead vibe.

3 CABIN FEVER The chevron Navajo patterns in bold, sunny colours and prickly desert

cacti contrast with the invitingly cool white walls and polished concrete floors.

The novel A-shaped shelving unit plays on the American Indian zigzag motif; in this cool

cabin, geometry rules and is repeated in the artwork, lighting, cushions and throws.
