THE NIGHT BEFORE MY FIRST DAY on real living I was

so excited I couldn’t sleep. It was like being invited to front

my favourite band. Of course playing with rockstars can

be intimidating to say the least, and I’d been told in no

uncertain terms by old workmates that as the editor of

real living, it was time I got a handle on my untidiness

and put an end to the make-shift wardrobe under my desk.

So armed with a shiny new Hay pen and a beautiful orchid,

I moved into my new digs, vowing to turn over a new leaf.

But after 12 days, things have already gone south. Clothes

have reappeared, a bookshelf has been taken over by my

collection of hot sauces and there are papers everywhere.

But to my surprise and delight, my organised chaos has

been wholeheartedly embraced by the team. In fact, the six

pairs of shoes and crate of chilli barely raised an eyebrow.

It reminded me of why I fell in love with real living many

years ago. It’s not about being perfect; it’s seeing the

beauty in your surrounds, and finding joy and inspiration in

your most treasured possessions – in my case, Tabasco.

Like falling in love, buying a house or finding the perfect

sofa, when you find “The One” you just know. And after

putting my first issue to bed, I can safely say I’m head over

heels with my new gig and already dropping the “L bomb”.

I hope you find something in this issue that makes you

want to drop it too.
