There are three ways to get vitamin D –
sun-exposure, diet and supplementation.
“As Australia has one of the highest rates of
skin cancer in the world, it makes sense to
try to obtain healthy levels of vitamin D
from another source,” advises Dr Stewart.
WHAT ABOUT VITAMIN D?
HOW TO:
PICK THE
RIGHT SPF
FOR YOU
PHYSICAL SPF
Often called sunblock, these
sit on the skin and use zinc
and/or titanium dioxide to
physically block UV light.
“These have the fewest
ingredients, so tend to be the
top choice for those with
sensitive skin, allergies, or for
young children,” explains
Dr Stewart. Tr y : SunSense
Invisible SPF 50+, $10.95.
CHEMICAL SPF
The most common form of
SPF, these penetrate the skin
and absorb or scatter light.
“Large molecules transform
damaging wavelengths of light
[UV] into different, less harmful
forms [of infrared],” says Dr
Stewart. “Generally speaking,
chemical sunscreens are better
at blocking UVB wavelengths
over UVA.” Tr y : Neutrogena
Ultra Sheer Fluid, $19.99.
