For a sun-baked effect that lasts through hot
and humid days, start building texture in the
shower with Redken Beach Envy Volume
Texturizing Shampoo and Conditioner,
$26.95 each, before using your favourite
styling product like John Frieda Beach
Blonde Sea Waves Sea-Salt Spray, $16.99.

Everything we love about summer – surf,
sand, chlorine – also strips your hair of protein.
“Cleansing conditioners cleanse and condition
in one step, helping to balance and refresh hair
without stripping or depleting natural oils and
nutrients,” says O’Rourke. And they’re a space
saver if you’re travelling. Try Matrix Biolage
Cleansing Conditioner for Medium Hair, $39.95.

CUT BACK
ON TOOL TIME
Your hair is already exposed to a
lot of heat, so give it a break with
a few “tools-down” days. “If you
are going to use heated styling
equipment, invest in a high-quality
tool that has variable heat options,
and always use a heat protection
spray to stop colour fade and
further breakage,” says O’Rourke.
A humidity shield such as
Tigi Bed Head Straighten
Out, $27.95, can also extend
the life of your blow-out.

“Water, along with sunlight and chlorine, is a key
reason why your colour fades quicker in summer,”
explains O’Rourke. Pre-pool, drench hair with
fresh water to minimise chlorine absorption and
coat with a light wax which acts as a barrier;
post-pool, rinse right away. At home, reduce
colour fade with Goldwell Kerasilk Color
Shampoo and Conditioner, $34.95 each.

The new way to wear this summer
style: “Wrap a leather cord
around the knot or weave through
a braid,” suggests O’Rourke.

LEARN TO LOVE
GEL AGAIN
Glossy wet-look hair minimises frizz and works
on all types. For shorter hair, cover all over with
gel. (Try Garnier Fructis Style Sculpting Gel,
$7.65.) On longer styles, combine mousse with
serum and coat strands from root to tip.
“Blow-dry hair backwards using a round
bristle brush to create a smooth and sleek base,
and if you have a part, use a comb to ensure it’s
completely straight,” says O’Rourke. For extra
shine, O’Rourke suggests applying an oil or
serum with a toothbrush on styled hair.
