Distracted You
could be in r a promotion ...

Huh? Why is it great?
“Our clever brains have
devised distractions as
escape hatches, which
allow us to restore mental
energy and tap into
our imaginations,” says
Jenny Brockis, author of
Brain Fit! How Smarter
Thinking Can Save Your
Brain. “Solving complex
problems, making the best
decisions and coming up
with brilliant new ideas
are all easier to achieve if
we allow ourselves to be
temporarily distracted
from time to time.”

I can flick between
work and Tinder and
still be a hit at work?
Not quite. “There’s a good,
bad and ugly type to
distraction,” says Brockis.
The good: “Deliberate

daydreaming is great
preparation for coming
up with new insights
because your mind
wanders off on tangents
rather than focusing on
one mental pathway.”
The bad: “Being distracted
by emails is seen as
sapping our mental
energy. But they can
provide our subconscious
with a breathing space.”
The ugly: “The danger
with emails, texts and
Snapchats is their
addictive potential. Every
time we open up a new
message our brain
anticipates a potential
reward. This motivates us
to repeat the behaviour
because our brain finds
it rewarding. Which
turns a distraction into
a whole new activity.”

“Write down your top three priorities for the next day.
Focus only on these tasks until they’re finished.”
“Divide your work into tasks that can be achieved in set
periods of time (for example, 30 minutes) during which you
can maintain your focus. Then close all unnecessary tabs
on your computer and turn your phone to silent. Playing
quiet music through headphones can also help you focus.”
“Choose to monotask. Multitasking is the one brain
function that gets worse with practice.”
“Allocating 10–15 minutes of quiet thought before jumping
into the task helps to keep you focused on the final goal.”

I’m so good at being distracted I’m struggling
to meet my deadline. Help!
Here’s how to focus when you really need to ...
