EMBELLISH IT
Gather your supplies
Loom-woven cotton rag rug in
cream or white, 70 x 120cm
(or adjust design to suit rug);
masking tape; acrylic paints in
orange, pink, mustard, black and
green; flat paintbrush or mini
foam roller; upholstery needle
with large eye; yarn in colours
to match paints, plus cream or

ecru; pompom maker or rings
of cardboard; pencil; hot-glue
gun and glue sticks (optional)

Here’s how
STEP 1 Referring to Embellish
it diagram 1 (below), transfer
design to rug in pencil. Use
masking tape to mask edges
of large geometric shapes,
paint each zone with 2 coats
of paints in colours pictured,
leaving to dry after each coat.
STEP 2 Referring to diagram 2,
using upholstery needle and first
yarn colour, stitch areas of rug
as indicated, using very long,
close-together stitches. Bring
yarn up immediately next to
previous stitch without carrying
yarn across back of rug.
Continue stitching with colours
Here’s how until stitching is complete.
STEP 1 To create same
arrangement as pictured,
build boxes to following
dimensions, measuring
and cutting 1 back and
4 sides, noting to reduce
measurements as needed
to allow for depth of
overlapping timber:

■ A 32.7H x 27.5L x 18.5Dcm
■ B 35H x 40L x 26Dcm
■ C 19H x 50L x 18.5Dcm
■ D 14H x 21L x 18.5Dcm
■ E 48H x 23L x 18.5Dcm
■ F 33H x 14L x 26Dcm
■ G 33H x 50L x 10Dcm
■ H 12H x 26L x 9Dcm
■ I 33H x 28L x 18Dcm

STEP 2 On 1 side, predrill
2 evenly spaced holes along
1 face, 6mm in from edge.
Repeat for other 3 sides.
STEP 3 To affix sides, apply
glue then butt 2 plywood
components together in an L
shape. Check for square. First
use a 3mm drill bit to predrill
through pilot holes then drive
a screw through each hole to
secure. Repeating process,
attach next side then last
side to complete the frame.

STEP 4 Place backing
in position. Predrill, glue
then drive 2 screws into
each side to secure.
STEP 5 If painting, paint with
undercoat. Let dry. Paint in
2 coats of chosen topcoat
colour, sanding between coats.
STEP 6 To join boxes or
crates together in a single
unit, working on a large flat
surface, arrange boxes in
rows (with back of boxes on
work surface). Predrill, glue
then screw together the first
2 boxes, using 2 screws
in each side. Continue
attaching boxes in this
way until row is complete.
Repeat for remaining rows.
Using same process, join
rows together at top and
bottom to complete unit.
STEP 8 Predrill then screw
in a decorative drawer
knob to each side.
STEP 7 Screw crates
into wall studs or use wall
plugs to attach to masonry
wall. Use suitable wall
fasteners for your wall.
STEP 9 Tie a loop of rope
around each draw knob. Knot
together at top and hang
from a wall hook above unit.
