STEP 3 Referring to
diagram 3 (see page 197),
use a pompom maker to
make pompoms 5–10cm dia
from yarn colours. Arrange
in flower bud and flower
shapes. Using a book or
piece of card, make tassels
from yarn to surround and
embellish pompoms.
STEP 4 Using 3 strands
of green yarn at once,
create stems as pictured
in diagram 3, holding
stems in place with small
stitches working across the
yarns using yarn of same
colour. Attach pompoms
and tassels in place with
hand stitching or hot glue.

Finished size
140 x 220cm
Gather your supplies
Acrylic undercoat; 28mm x
1.5m Tasmanian oak dowel;
foam roller; paintbrush;
acrylic paint in yellow;
225m x 6mm or 7mm cotton
sash cord; scissors; drill
and bit; eye screws; ceiling
hooks and wall plugs as
needed for your ceiling type
Here’s how
STEP 1 Apply undercoat
to dowel, let dry. Paint with
2 coats of yellow paint,
allowing to dry after each
coat. Hang dowel on a
wall or fence, just a bit
higher than head height.
STEP 2 Cut 22 lengths
of 8m-long sash cord.
STEP 3 Fold each length
in half and loop onto dowel
(see Square knot diagram
part a, page 200).
STEP 4 Starting with first
2 pairs on left-hand side
(4 strands) and working
about 10cm below dowel,
take left strand (coloured
red in diagrams) over middle
2 strands and under (blue)
strand on far right (see
part a). Now take (blue)
far right strand behind 2
middle strands and out
through loop formed by
red strand (see part b).
Pull right and left strands
gently until knot tightens.
This is a half-square knot.
STEP 5 To complete a full
square knot, repeat the
process from right-hand
side: take far right strand
over middle 2 strands and
under far left strand (see
part c). Next, take far left
strand behind 2 middle
strands and out through
loop formed by red strand
(see part d). Pull these 2
strands until they make a
knot with woven strands
from previous step. You now
have a full square knot.
STEP 6 Repeat Steps 4
and 5 to make a square
knot on each of eleven
4-strand sets across
row of lengths, keeping
them all the same
distance below dowel.
STEP 7 For next row, begin
with middle group of the
eleven 4-strand sets and
create new groups of 4
strands by combining 2 left-
hand strands of centre set
with 2 right-hand strands
of adjacent set, and 2 right-
hand strands of centre set
