Open up about
yourself. Most
people advise asking
lots of questions
simply because
everyone’s favourite
topic is themselves.
“I actually advise
against that,” says
RoAne. “If all you’re
doing is asking
questions, that gets
tedious, and people
may think you’re
nosy.” Instead, ask
them questions, then
comment on their
responses by sharing
your own stories so
that you keep the
back-and-forth
chatter going.

Make your intro more memorable.
RoAne is a proponent of the ‘self-introduction’.
It’s a seven-to-nine-second (specific!) greeting
t h a t i n c l u d e s y o u r n a m e a n d , i n s t e a d o f y o u r
job title, your job description. RoAne once met
a man in a cafe, asked him what he did, and
h e r e p l i e d : “ I h e l p r i c h p e o p l e s l e e p a t n i g h t. ”
That’s more intriguing than financial planner, eh?

Pretend the
person you’re
talking to is the
only one in the
room. “There is
nothing more off-
putting and insulting
t o p e o p l e t h a n t o h a v e
someone talking to
them and looking
around to see who
e l s e i s i n t h e r o o m , ”
explains RoAne.
Are you guilty?
