GUIDE TO STYLE – 03 / 17

A. Pick Of The Crop
Just as there was a time for
skinny jeans – specifically
2003 until 2012, thank god –
so there is a right moment
to consign your high quiff to
history. For the over-thirties,
that time is now. From hereon,
the way you wear your hair
is about style, not fashion.
A precisely cut side parting,
close crop or easy rider suits
any look. Sceptical? Think of
a timeless style icon. Did he
have an undercut? Precisely.

C. Scissor Happy
Clippers are the weapon of
choice for hipster barbers.
The step change from long,
manicured top to closely
clipped sides has dominated
hair trends. It’s a good (if tired)
look that works best on men
aged 28 with a waist size
to match. For a more adult
hairline, opt for a finger-length
scissor cut around the back
and sides. It looks as sharp
and impressive at work as it
does with jeans and a T-shirt.

B. Body Blow
Men’s hair thins with age, so
you need to work with your
hairline instead of clinging on
to your style. That feathered
cut might have looked good
in the Britpop years, but
does it work now? Likewise,
if your quiff won’t play ball,
that’s nature’s way of telling
you to wear it shorter. You
can still have it longer on top,
but ask for it balanced with
scissors, overcombed into
the nape. To mention Steve
McQueen here sounds clichéd,
but Google his haircut. That.

D. Product Management
Graceful maturation doesn’t
mean clearing the cabinet.
True, a surfeit of gel/pomade
is a sign of callow youth, but
haircare is still crucial. Start
with a volumising shampoo
(American Crew Trichology
£12), then apply your product
judiciously: a 5p-sized blob
of moulding cream will give
shorter hairstyles subtle
texture. For longer cuts, try
using a styling conditioner
instead of wax; that way you’ll
end up looking more Daniel
Craig, less One Direction.

No man over 30 should rock a haircut with
a name, goes the unwritten grooming rule.
It’s a good one. Venerable barber Brent
Pankhurst explains how to transition from
quiff to crop gracefully, and why a classic
cut will never look out of place
