COMING AROUND AGAIN

Spring marathons, and particularly the Virgin
Money London Marathon, are like Christmas in the
running community. e build-up starts months
out, it’s on everyone’s lips at running clubs and in
the running media and then, before you know it,
this huge festival of running is upon us again.

is April, it will be 15 years since I rst ran
London and, although I’m not taking part this year,
the routine of looking at training plans, trying on new high-mileage trainers
and even the smell of the race expo have a comforting familiarity for me.
One of the great things about big races like London is that they often attract
a higher percentage of marathon rst-timers, and sensing people’s excitement
and nerves as they approach this life-changing race never fails to inspire me.

So it was a real pleasure to meet up with the ladies from our Big Marathon
Challenge team again in January, to help them get tted for their new ASICS
training shoes and talk to them about their progress. If you’re training for a
marathon yourself, you can now enjoy some of the coaching expertise the
team has access to as Richard Coates has written three 12-week marathon
training plans for you, with part one starting on page 34. Get to it!

MUSIC &
MOVEMENT
What we’re running and
recovering to this month

 na Chantrey
“I love ‘The Weekend’ by
Starboy ft Daft Punk; the
beat is so up tempo it’s
perfect for the end of a training run or race.”

Cristina Lopez
“I’ve been loving Little Mix’s
‘Touch’ (don’t laugh). It’s
so upbeat and exactly the
motivation I need when running.”

Christina Macdonald
“I’m listening to ‘You Got
It’ by Roy Orbison from the
‘Mystery Girl’ album. The old
ones are the best!”

MARCH 2017 ISSUE#

“I loved racing and pacing over
Christmas before a seasonal
cough settled in - now it’s recovery
mode!” – Tina

“Nothing like an early, frosty morning
run to start the new year with my
sister and doggy.” – Cristina

“I ran in purple to celebrate Kathrine
Switzer’s 70th birthday. Women all
over the world were doing the same
to support equality.” - Juliet

“I ran the Jolly Roger! An off-road
half, donations to Cornwall Search
and Rescue. Plenty of mud and a
tot of rum! At one point you could
see both Cornish coasts.” – Jackie

“I’ve been visiting my dad in South
Africa who inspired me to run!
Amazingly, he still runs every day at
the age of 77 - a habit he started as a
student.” – Lisa
