a malfunction, they’ll report it to a
transmitter that’s worn around the
wrist. And this transmitter in turn
aggregates the information that
has been collected and sends it
to the GWC7 data centers, where
a diagnostic program is always
active. Could such a system save
lives? Undoubtedly! Google itself
reckons around 100,000 per year.
And yet, experts are critical of the
project; after all, who guarantees
that the stored data will not be
misused? Medical historian Paul
Unschuld warns against agencies
that seek to buy this information
and dispense health ratings. He is
concerned that in the future, the
success of those who want to take
out insurance, rent an apartment,
or even get a job could depend on
such assessments. Currently, this
much is certain: If nanobots start
to patrol in our bodies and only
GWC7 is accountable, it will usher
in an entirely new era for humanity.

H

ow do you get someone
to give up on protecting
his last and most intimate
secrets? In a clandestine
Google research laboratory south
of San Francisco with the code
name “GWC7,” there are those
who think they have the answer:
offer a person a long, healthy life.
To this end, GWC7 researchers
have developed a technique that
enables malfunctions in the body
to be detected and treated long
before they become a problem.
The only thing Google asks for is
ever-more sensitive information
about people: their health data.
And for this reason, GWC7 seeks
to penetrate our heads. Not just
figuratively, but also physically.
Google wants to enter our bones,
muscles, veins—every single cell.
With tiny nanomachines! They are
2,000 times smaller than a blood
cell and more resistant than any
virus. If the small detectors notice
