How much windcan
a tree withstand?

Leonardo da Vinci once examined trees to assess
how resistant they are to breaking. And now, almost
500 years later, French researchers conducted an
experiment and fi gured out that more than 50% of
trees that are not located in the protective zone of
a forest break at a wind speed of around 138 feet
per second (94 miles per hour). Height, diameter,
the type of tree, and the type of subsoil play hardly
any role. The reason: A larger tree is sturdier and
at the same time it also has stronger roots, so the
relationship between size and attack surface of
the wind remains constant.
