Lighting up
Use lighting to create mood,
and make those light sources
statements in themselves. Here,
David opted for vintage Murano
lamps from Capocchi, lighting
recessed under the marble
plinth and a ’70s Gingobilo
floor lamp bought in Milan.
Touch up
Texture and bedrooms are cosy
companions. “The velvet wall
panels, plush wool carpet
[Central Park from Victoria
Carpets] and the wallpaper
work together to create a soft,
sumptuous palette that is
serene and restful,” says David.
Be a show-off
The monolithic Nero Marquina
marble plinth is a useful display
space for objects, such as the
antique mirror and artefacts
gathered on travels, but it
also anchors the room and
provides a counterpoint to
the wallpaper above.Stripe tease
Discreet pattern in the
wallpaper, black marble
and bedspread lends visual
interest, but it is subtly
seductive and never overwhelms- no jarring wake-up calls here.
The use of repeated motifs
result in a coherent whole.

The project
Luxury and bedrooms make perfect
partners, as this inviting space shows.
It’s part of a ground-floor apartment in
South Yarra, Melbourne, recently
completed by designer David Hicks. The
four-bedroom apartment occupies
the entire ground floor and because the
homeowners have two young children,
“they wanted this room to be a retreat as
well as sleeping space”, says David. They
also fancied it as somewhere they could
indulge a little. “The apartment is fairly
minimalist, so the they wanted to
have a little more fun here, hence
the zebra-print wallpaper.”David’s top tips
A bedroom is an important room;
don’t be afraid to ramp up the luxury.
Incorporate beautiful finishes such as
wallpaper, upholstered walls, marble
and exotic timber.
Include sitting areas and furniture;
this gives the room another dimension
and another use.#
