anksia flowers and eucalyptus leaves may be
sweetly commonplace fixtures in the landscape,
but for florist Lisschele Masters, owner of Perth’s
Flowers in the Garden, they are also inspirational raw
materials, ripe for artistic reinvention. For years Lisschele
has been making abstract and sustainable art inspired
by “everyday natural materials”, reworking organic
elements in a way that amplifies their inherent beauty.
She started sharing her works on Instagram in 2012 and
now has legions of followers. The piece pictured here
features a banksia sphere sitting on a eucalyptus mat,

both works of intricacy and painstaking patience. To
construct the centrepiece, Lisschele removed the flower
spikes from a Banksia victoriae flowerhead, arranged
them by length and carefully shaped them into a sphere.
The leaf mat was created using 150 dried eucalyptus
leaves, each harvested for its colour and form. These
were layered in a fish-scale pattern and glued to a raffia
base. “The colours were incredibly beautiful, even in
their dried state,” says Lisschele.
