Layeredplanting along the
length of the pool consists of a low
row ofRhaphiolepis‘Oriental Pearl’,
a lilly pilly hedge (Syzygium australe
‘Select’) andMagnolia‘Little Gem’.
They are able to thrive because
this is a mineral pool system, where
water is treated with a magnesium
solution rather than salt or chlorine.

This poolside pergola with built-in
seat echoes the pergola at the rear
of the house. The slatted seat
back also screens the pool filter
and equipment. White wisteria
climbs over the structure while
star jasmine grows up the fence.

Pool rules
The rear terrace tiles and pool
coping are grey granite. “The
colour, texture and marble-like
veining give life to the hard
surface,” says Hugh. The pool
is lined in aqua and pale blue
glass mosaics.
