LITTLE LUXURIES FOR MAXIMUM EFFECT

It’s the thoughtful little things that can make a big
difference to a guest bathroom, says Santilli. “Quality
towels are a great investment and they’re always
appreciated by visitors. Candles, room fragrances and
a luxurious handwash are beautiful finishing touches.”

Go the extra tile
Your tile selection can have a huge
impact. As counter-intuitive as it may
seem, oversized tiles could actually
be the bestchoice for a smaller room.
“Larger tiles mean fewer grout lines and
less disruption to the eye, so they make
a room look bigger,” says Santilli. “Using
the same tile on the walls and the floor
can also work in your favour.”

Put the fun in functionality
“A guest bathroom is where you can
design in a bit of wow factor,” says Eira
Drady, marketing manager for Parisi.
“Your main bathroom and ensuite need
to have their focus on functionality, but
a guest bathroom isn’t used as often, so
be more adventurous.” Try colourful
tapware, accent tiles or striking
cabinetry, she suggests.

Play it safe
Lever-handled tapware is a smart choice
for a guest bathroom because visitors

  • from the very young to the elderly –
will be able to operate the taps with
    ease. Likewise, slip-resistant flooring
is important to consider. Mosaic tiles,
with their multiple grout lines, offer great
traction while slippery marble slabs sit at
the other end of the safety spectrum.

What’s in store?
Guests usually have only a few toiletries,
so you could get away with a shower
niche and a shaving cabinet, says Darren
Genner, design director of Minosa. “That
said, we do prefer to put in at least a little
bench space.” For Cohen, a vanity is vital.
“It’s nice for visitors to be able to unpack.
A vanity that has a drawer with a hairdryer
is a thoughtful inclusion.” #

PAMPER PACKS
“Even the mostprepared traveller
occasionally forgets things,”
says Malone. “I think it’s nice to
make visitors feel welcome by
stocking your guest bathroom
with fresh towels, soap,
toothbrushes and toothpaste.
Avaseofflowersisanotherlovely
touch.” A small wastebin is a
practical and valuable inclusion,
adds Cohen, as are a magnifying
mirror and cosy bathrobes.

TALL THE WAY
“Tallboys are a wonderful
storage option because they
takeadvantageoftheroom’s
under-utilised vertical space,”
says Santilli. “If you go for a
bespoke choice, like our Zuster
Issy Butterfly tallboy, you’ll be
able to offer your visitors space
to stow away everything from
make-up to laundry.”
