FIRE POLE Fire poles were removed from all Queensland fire
stations in the 1970s; on a whim, owners Nicki and Michael Dalton
decided to reinstall a refurbished one in its original location (within
what is now the dining hall). Accessed via a locked cupboard upstairs,
it’s a hit with their children (from left) Lucy, Alice, Harry and Charlie.
FAC ADE The property had one owner between its life as a working
fire station and the Daltons taking possession. “In fact, it was still
zoned as commercial and a significant amount of work was required
to have it reclassified as residential,” says architect Paul Owen.
A roller door on the engine room/dining hall was replaced by
pivoting doors to deliver a dramatic new entrance.
