M

y daughter’s Year 6 class has been
working on a ‘passion project’ this
past term, to create a magazine. As
I’ve watched her go through the process of
mapping out features ideas, searching for
images and interview subjects, I’ve been
more mindful ofH&Gprocesses and
content triggers.
With a Reno Issue slated, we begin the
hunt for home makeovers that offer readers
something new. With a month or two to go,
there may be up to 10 homes in the frame,
with location, seasonal appropriateness
and innovation determining their place on
the art department wall. This is where the
visual mapping of an issue is done, where
images and stories drop in and out until
we’re happy with the mix.
A spring renovation issue generally
guarantees the appearance of a
Queenslander or two and this edition
is no exception. The classic wraparound
verandah, weatherboards and fretwork
typology is familiar to us all and yet the
renovation outcomes of the three
Queensland homes appearing this month
couldn’t be more different.
Margie and Simon’s 1920s home has had
walls removed to reconfigure spaces to suit
their family of six. Floor plan fixed, it was
then treated to a Hamptons-style refresh.
Also in Brisbane, Claire and Scott’s
“small renovation” developed into aforever
home in the hands of Kieron Gait
Architects. Their new ground floor kitchen/
dining/living space, all spotted gum and

bluestone flooring, connects directly to the
backyard and its cool, shady nature has
made it the family’s favourite retreat in this
subtropical town.
Two Melbourne homes made the line-up:
a terrace where a dramatic new courtyard
has created a spectacular light well, and the
revamp of a semi approached with a great
sense of fun.
But it’s the third Queensland property
in the issue that was the gazumper this
month, nudging another renovated home
out late in the game... How could we
resist the opportunity to run the ultimate
renovation story, the conversion of a former
fire station into a functional family home
(with fire pole). As our clever sub-editor
Rosa noted, “it’s a real trailblazer”.
Enjoy!
