AWhat a wonderful idea! Fortunately,
there are plenty of modern classics to
choose from. Australia has many
innovative furniture designers whose
works are now very collectable. Grant
Featherston (1922-1995) enjoyed great
success with his Contour Chair,
designed in 1951. The Contour and 16
other Featherston designs, including
the B230H at right, were recently
relaunched by manufacturer Grazia &
Co as the Featherston 2016 Collection.
Any one of these striking designs would
be an appropriate choice. For more
recent designs, I suggest you have
a look at Adam Goodrum’s Stitches
chair (available from Cult), Michael
Goldsmith’s Meri Chair and Matthew
Sheargold’s Zip Ottoman (both available
through Woodmark). If you were
considering an international piece, for
my money it’s got to be Mies van der
Rohe’s Barcelona Chair (available in
Australia through Dedece). Sitting on
an original recently in the Barcelona
Pavilion, Spain, confirmed for me that
it is by far the most comfortable of all
the modern designer chairs. >
