THE MAKING HOURSAfternoons are dedicated to art making, with Rachel
dividing her time between painting, stitching and screenprinting. “I love working
in three mediums. I never get stuck because if something’s not working in one
medium I put it down and start on another. Having the three options is my trump
card; it keeps me motivated and helps evolve my art practice.”

5pm
SCREENPRINTING “I always find myself starting a new
artwork at 5pm,” says Rachel, embarking here on a fresh
screenprint. “I know I shouldn’t but that’s just how it happens,
because that’s when the phone stops ringing. Before I know it,
it’s 6.30pm and I’m scrambling to pack up and get out the door.”

FUN FACTORY“While my screenprint is drying, I’ll attend to emails. I love
to know what customers are buying, what they’re asking,” says Rachel. Words of
wisdom adorn the walls (above). “Our studio motto is ‘it’s on the wall’. The walls
are covered with visual references, paintings, sketches and words. If we’re looking
for a design solution, the answer’s there.”www.castleandthings.com.au. #
