F

urniture giant Ikea has forged
a first-time partnership with
design students from the National
Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi, India, to produce a
new limited-edition homewares collection, Svärtan.
Led by Swedish fashion and textile designer Martin Bergström
(above), the Svärtan collection consists of textiles, soft furnishings,
paper items, glassware, ceramic and metal bowls, fabulous tray
tables and plates. The items are largely made from natural materials
and are produced using traditional Indian techniques.
Abandoning the usual colourful representations
of India, Svärtan instead focused on the
geographical land characteristics and
cityscapes –think tangled overhead phone
wires and monsoonal rains – of the country
for inspiration. The result is a moody
monochromatic palette in a multitude of
textures. “Each item is beautifully
handcrafted,” says
Christine Gough, Ikea’s
interior design leader.
“The imperfect finishes
and incredible textures
will add a unique touch
to your home.”
Svärtan is available now.
