The vision board for fashionistas, Pinterest
allows you to collect and collate images from
the web, adding them to a digital blank canvas.
So whilst browsing an online shopping site you
discover an item of clothing you’d like to
purchase... when you have more money in the
till. Simply tap the ‘pin’ button and the image
will be added to the board of your choosing,
along with a description and link to the
picture’s original location. You can also search
and browse by category for pins created by
others, as well as share your own boards with
friends. Not only useful for fashion, the app
can be used for planning things like weddings,
birthdays, even a kitchen renovation.

Real-life experiences can be better than a
physical gift. I would much prefer a trip to
Paris than a miniature Eiffel Tower keychain...
hint, hint. Groupon provides a one-stop shop
to a wide range of discounted experiences not
only in Australia but all over the world. With
savings up to 70% off the normal cost, you’re
bound to find something great to see, eat or
drink. The app features deals like theme park
tickets, three-course meals at fancy
restaurants, bowling, phone plans and
much more. Offers can be filtered by location
or type. The app allows you to instantly
purchase, store and redeem offers —
all without leaving the app.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to know
where and how the clothes you buy are made.
I’m the first to admit I often fail to think about
the conditions under which that ‘bargain’ $5
T-shirt was manufactured overseas. Good On
You was created by an Australian charity
concerned about the impact clothing brands
can have on people, animals and the
environment. Featuring ratings for over 1,200
brands, you can quickly see how companies
are performing in working conditions, with
scores based on data from a range of reliable
sources. The app allows you browse and search
for brands, hopefully encouraging you to
make more ethical purchasing decisions.

Sometimes buying something second hand
can be just as good as purchasing it new, not to
mention for half the price. Plus, with enough
bleach almost anything can go back to its
pristine state. Gumtree is the classifieds section
of the traditional newspaper, but in digital
form. Here, you’ll find things like cars, phones,
even (failed) engagement rings up for sale.
Listings can be browsed and filtered by
category, location or price; with the ability
to contact sellers to discuss the specifics of an
item. Goods can be saved to a watchlist for
easy referral. The app allows you make money
off your own products by creating ads
featuring photos and a detailed description.
