HAVING GOOD AND unique passwords
is a vital element of modern security.
Unfortunately, regular humans can’t
remember a unique password for every site.
Instead, it’s better to have one master password
for a password manager, then have that
password manager remember the rest.
The best password manager for a few years
running has been LastPass, a cloud-based
manager that’s free for use on PCs and costs
a small amount for use on mobiles. Here’s a
quick guide for setting it up.

01 Head to lastpass.com and click on ‘Get
LastPass Free’. Depending on which
browser you’re currently using, you’ll be taken
to the add-on page or the Windows Store
(for Edge). Install the browser add-on.

02 Once the add-on is installed, you’ll be
taken to the login/account creation page.
03 Give it a secure email address as your
username, and create a master
password. This master password is incredibly
important. A random string of numbers and
letters is the way to go.

04 Once you’ve done that, the add-on
should be installed and running.
If you check the box to remember the LastPass
password, it will automatically log on when
you start your browser.

05 Once it’s installed and running, it works
a lot like the password vault built into
your browser. When you visit and log into a site,
it will ask you if you’d like it to remember your
password. The same happens when you create
a new account with a site.

06 When you’re creating a new password,
you’ll see a little icon of a lock with a
circular arrow around it in the password field.
This is the auto-password generator. Click on it,
then in the popup box click on Generate and
fill. This will create a good password for you,
and LastPass will remember that password.

07 Click on ‘Save Site’ when it asks, and
you’ll get the page where the site
information is stored, with all the data already
filled in for you.

08 You can see and edit all your stored
passwords by clicking on the LastPass
icon in the browser bar and selecting ‘My Vault’.
This will take you to a page that lists all the sites
you’ve stored.

09 You can install LastPass on all your PCs
and in all your browsers. Since it’s
cloud-based, all the passwords will transfer
over. If you have a premium account, you can
also install it on your mobile.

HOW TO USE LASTPASS

TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION
Given how important the security of your
LastPass vault is, enabling two-factor
authentication is a must. To do this, open up
your LastPass Vault by clicking on the browser
icon. Click on Account Settings, then on the
Multifactor options tab.
Next to LastPass Authenticator, click on the
edit button (it looks like a pencil), then change
Enabled to ‘Yes’ and Update. You’ll be asked to
re-enter your master password, then you’ll be
walked step-by-step through the process to
Enroll a mobile phone as the authentication
device (it will require that you install an app
on your mobile). After that, whenever you try a
new login to LastPass, a message will be sent
to the LastPass Authenticator app on your
mobile for confirmation by you.

Use the LastPass password generator on new sites.
