A SUITE THAT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER — PERFECT DETECTION
OF MALWARE AND EXCELLENT FEATURES.WHEN IT COMES to anti-malware, Kaspersky has the goods on the
competition. With perfect detection rates (a feat also accomplished by
Trend Micro, Symantec and McAfee), no false positives and a minimal
impact on performance, no other suite does anti-malware quite as well
as Kaspersky.
But it’s not just anti-malware that ties the Kaspersky suite in first
place with Bitdefender. The collection of additional features has grown
to rival the best of the competition, while the user interface has been
simplified and streamlined to make it much easier for regular users.
It’s now an install-and-forget suite, which is pretty much how we want
our suites to be.
It covers all your basics (malware, firewall, spam, malicious site
filters) but there’s a lot more going on here as well. There’s a secure
browser for online banking and shopping; a password manager with
multiple-device synchronisation; cloud-managed and extended parental
controls (nearly rivalling Bitdefender and Symantec); encryption and
backup tools for protecting files; and optimisation tools and app update
checker. It also comes with a volume-limited VPN service called Secure
Connect that will automatically fire up if it detects that you’re connected
to an insecure Wi-Fi network.
Total Security does support the expenditure of licenses on non-PC
platforms (Mac, iOS and Android), and the parental controls extend to
those platforms. It’s currently a little more expensive than BitDefender,
but we feel that Kaspersky has finally caught up with its rival in terms of
quality and features and may well be poised to take over as our top suite.Symantec Norton Security Premium
for Three Devices
GREAT FOR FAMILIES.NORTON WAS ONE of the pioneers of ‘managed’ home security,
and today it still offers the most user- and family-friendly suite on
the market. It may not have the extensive feature set of Kaspersky or
Bitdefender, but as a set-it-and-forget-it solution it still has no rivals.
Where Kaspersky and Bitdefender still do expect you to know a little
about security (although they are much better than they were),
Symantec asks for pretty much nothing. It just does what it does.
There is a lot that goes on in the background here. With web defences,
anti-malware (among the best tested), anti-phishing and email and
social media monitoring. There is active identity theft protection,
stopping the transmission of personal information, and Identity Safe,
a useful password manager with device syncing. It also has a backup
tool, and the three- and five-device versions of Norton Security
Premium come with 25GB of online storage.
But the suite’s crown jewel is without a doubt its family safety
features, and if parental controls are a major factor in your purchasing
decision this may be the suite to get. It supports mobile and desktop
platforms, with an agent installed that monitor’s and manages your
kids’ online activities. Reports, alerts, content snippets and
recommendations are all delivered to you through a web portal, sparing
the need to actually access the devices. Via the same web portal, you can
monitor the security of devices attached to your account and set full
access rules for all devices.
Even though Bitdefender and Kaspersky now have similar solutions,
the breadth, capability and ease of use of Symantec’s solution still sets it
