THIS IS MORE of a personal security device

than a corporate security device, as its sole

goal is to ensure you don’t lose your stuff

ever again. The Mate is a small version of

the Tile product range, and is perfect for

attaching to your keyring or phone.

Powered by Bluetooth with a built-in,

non-rechargeable battery, it syncs with the

Tile app on your phone to allow you to find

your device at the click of a button on the

smartphone app.

Setup couldn’t be easier — install the

app, hit the logo on the Tile Mate, and it’s

synched to your phone. Next time you lose

your keys, and you simply hit the ‘Find’

button, the Tile Mate will chirp out a happy

little song allowing you to quickly locate

your keys. It is limited by the range of

Bluetooth though, so you may need to take

a wander around your house before your

keys are in range.

USING IDENTICAL TECHNOLOGY to the

Tile Mate, the Slim is designed to be tucked

away inside your wallet, or stuck to the back

of your tablet/laptop. It uses the exact same

application, and Bluetooth synching is just

as easy. It’s also limited to Bluetooth’s range,

and the battery isn’t rechargeable.

One feature that is very handy, though, is

that the app is tied to your phone’s GPS. So

if you happen to leave your keys or wallet at

the pub, it will show you your last known

location of the device. And if you happen

to lose your phone in the process, you can

share your Tile devices to other friends’

phones, so they can look it up in case you’ve

had one of those nights. It’s of no use for

long-range security due to the lack of

built-in GPS, but if you need to find

something in the home or office that you’ve

misplaced, the Tile series of products will

happily supplement your failing memory.

You’ve probably heard how it’s now

possible for hackers to gain control of

your laptop or PC’s camera without your

knowledge, even disabling the small red

light that shows it’s in use. While this is

rather scary to say the least, there are

several webcam covers on the market

that will hide your view from any

potential virtual stalkers. They’re

generally extremely cheap, around the

$20 price point, as they’re just a piece

of plastic that slides down over the lens.

There’s an even easier solution though,

and it’s called sticky tape. Simply tape

some thick tape — such a packer’s or

plumber’s tape — to the front of your

webcam, and you can rest assured that

you won’t be videoed. You may still be

audio recorded though, for which there

really isn’t a cure; so make sure you run

regular virus and malware scans on your

PC, just in case!
