The actor, 39, uses art to emotionally

support those in need

In 2008 someone I was working with introduced me

to the Art of Elysium. The organization was founded

in 1997 by philanthropist Jennifer Howell and believes

in healing the world through art. It started by having

artists work with seriously ill children and later expanded

to working with other communities, including the elderly and the homeless.

I volunteer at Children’s Hospital here in Los Angeles. I give these incredible

kids an hour or two to escape by painting with them in the waiting room, playing

music or helping to throw a party for those who have to spend the holidays

in the hospital. The great thing about interacting with these kids is that I’ve

found them more inspiring than I’m sure they’ve found me. As an artist, you’re

always hoping that you’re doing work that can help affect lives one way or

another. The acting industry can be self-serving—this

is a way to sort of get outside of yourself and use your

talents and your creativity to engage with and uplift
