The Channel Islands

Pretty villages, fascinating history and unspoilt
scenery – and all so close to home

J

ust a very short plane ride away is
a place where, as you touch down,
we guarantee you’ll feel yourself
starting to relax. The Channel
Islands, although technically part of
the UK, feel like a world of their own.
Our recommendation is to fly to
Guernsey and enjoy a fresh seafood
lunch before soaking up the sea views
from Pleinmont nature reserve and
the fascinating wartime history which
underpins the capital, St Peter Port.
Book yourself onto the evening flight to
Alderney and admire the sunset from the

16-seater plane. The tiny island is famous
for its white sandy beaches and quaint
cobbled streets, and there’s more than
a hint of France reminding you at every
turn how close you are to your French
neighbours. The gannet colony at Les
Etacs is a must; home to thousands of
birds nesting amongst the rocks.
On the smallest island of Sark, it’s time
to get on your bike – cycling is by far the
best way to explore. In La Seigneurie,
you’ll be dazzled by market gardens filled
with rows of beautiful flowers, growing
thanks to the local microclimate.
