The white-plumed grevillea throws
its fl owers high so insects and birds
can easily fi nd them, but why
the fl owers smell of old socks is
not understood.


Opposite: Hundreds of pale glands
in the leaf of a coarse-leaved
mallee contain pinene, an aromatic
compound common in pine needles,
and cineole, a common component
of eucalypt leaves.
