Where’s Mareeba:Mareeba is situated 40 minutes west
of Cairns, up the range past iconic Kuranda. Fancy a cuppa?
Mareeba is the coffee-growing capital of Queensland.
Where in Mareeba:Sewing Essentials is located centrally
in Byrnes Street, the main street of Mareeba.
Who plays host:Colleen, Tracy, Jill and Mary.
Worth visiting because:As our name suggests, all essential
sewing needs can be found in our store. We have pins, needles,
thread, scissors, crochet and knitting yarn, hooks and needles,
fabric for dress and craft, embroidery threads, ribbon, buttons
... you name it! We are a small-town, one-stop sewing shop, with
the type of friendly service you expect in the country. We use
what we sell, and are happy to assist, share experiences and
provide information. We proudly sell Elna and Husqvarna Viking
sewing machines. Many local ladies join our classes to learn
sewing, patchwork and hand embroidery – you can too!
Absolute beginners are welcome, or refine your skills if you need
a bit of help. Smiles, chatting and laughter are a must when
packing the sewing kit to come along. Pop in for a few classes,
or many. Whatever degree of assistance you need; we tailor
to individual achievement.
What we recommend:Can’t pop in all the time to see what is
new? The website is constantly updated – where a picture is

worth more than a thousand words. Just type in the www’s.
Travelling to the Cape? As the last fabric stop before venturing
on a trip to Cape York, visitors travelling north should top up
on sewing supplies.

Where’s Malanda:Malanda is 15 minutes outside of Atherton
on the beautiful Atherton Tablelands. While you are here, check
out the lovely waterfalls and rainforest walks – you might even
see a Lumholtz’s tree-kangaroo, found only in this area.

Where in Malanda:Malanda Rural, No 10 Hillcrest Road.
Corner of Malanda Milla Milla Road and Hillcrest Road,
opposite the Malanda Lodge.
Who plays host:Owner Rosemary, with help from her mum, Linda.
Worth visiting because:Some of you will know us from Darwin,
where we started the shop in the Nightcliff Shopping Centre in
April 2000. In 2010, we moved to Malanda. We have more than
30,000 products. Our extensive range includes cross stitch,
tapestries, knitting, crochet, embroidery, books, needlework
fabric, latch hooks, quilting and fabrics. We also have a whole
wall of threads. If you are looking for something particular, don’t
hesitate to ring or email us – we are happy to help. We are open
every Thursday or by appointment: just give me a call. Bus
groups are most welcome.
What we recommend:Please pop in and see our Aladdin’s
cave of products. You will be amazed at what we have. If it can
be done with a needle and thread, you will probably find it at
CrossStitch Corner.
