Cutting

1

From the solid black fabric, cut:

  • One strip, 16in across the width
of the fabric. Crosscut it on the bias
    to yield 20 strips,^11 ⁄ 2 in (appliquéd
vine). Cut more as needed once
    you’re working on the appliqué

  • One strip, 8^1 ⁄ 2 in down the length
    of the remaining fabric (border)

  • One strip, 12^1 ⁄ 2 in down the length
    of the remaining fabric (appliqué
    background)

  • 32 strips, 3in across the width of
the remaining fabric. Trim 16 of them
    to measure3x15^1 ⁄ 2 in and 16 to
    measure3x20^1 ⁄ 2 in (block borders).

From the solid white fabric, cut:

  • One strip, 16in across the width
of the fabric. Crosscut it on the bias
    to yield 20 strips,^1 ⁄ 2 in (appliquéd
vine). Cut more as needed once
    you’re working on the appliqué

  • One strip, 8^1 ⁄ 2 in down the length
    of the remaining fabric (border)

  • One strip, 12^1 ⁄ 2 in down the length
    of the remaining fabric (appliqué
    background)

  • 28 strips, 3in across the width of
the remaining fabric. Trim 14 of them
to measure3x15^1 ⁄ 2 in and the other
    14 to measure3x20^1 ⁄ 2 in (block
    borders)

From each of the five tone-on-tone
print fabrics, cut:

  • Four strips, 3in across the width of
the fabric. Crosscut them to yield six

strips, 3 x 10^1 ⁄ 2 in and six strips,
3x15^1 ⁄ 2 in (blocks)

  • Two strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the width
    of the fabric (binding).

4

From each of the 30cm (^3 ⁄ 8 yd)
lengths of black and white print
fabrics, cut:

  • Three squares, 10^1 ⁄ 2 in – 15 squares
    in all (block centres).

5

To make one block you will need
one 10^1 ⁄ 2 in square of black and
white print fabric; two 3 x 10^1 ⁄ 2 in
strips and two 3 x 15^1 ⁄ 2 in strips all cut
from the same tone-on-tone print
fabric; and two3x15^1 ⁄ 2 in strips and
two 3 x 20^1 ⁄ 2 in strips all cut from either
solid black or solid white fabric.

6

Sew the 10^1 ⁄ 2 in strips of tone-on-
tone print fabric to the top and
bottom edges of the black and white
print square. Press these seams (and
all subsequent seams) outwards. Sew
the 15^1 ⁄ 2 in strips of tone-on-tone print
fabric to the left and right edges and
press. Your block should measure 15^1 ⁄ 2 in
square from raw edge to raw edge.

7

Sew the 15^1 ⁄ 2 in strips of solid black
or white fabric to the top and
bottom edges of the block. Press.
Sew the 20^1 ⁄ 2 in strips of solid black
or white fabric to the left and right
edges of the block and press again.
Your block should measure 20^1 ⁄ 2 in
square from raw edge to raw edge.

8

Repeat Steps 5-7 to make a total
of 15 blocks: eight will have solid
black outer borders and seven will
have solid white outer borders.
