Cutting

1

From the assorted light cream
and beige print fabrics, cut:

  • 15 squares, 6^11 ⁄ 2 in (appliqué block
    backgrounds)

  • Five squares, 9^3 ⁄ 4 in. Crosscut each
square twice on the diagonal to yield
    20 quarter-square triangles (setting
    triangles)

  • 104 squares, 3in. Crosscut each
square once on the diagonal to yield
    208 half-square triangles (third border).

2

From the assorted dark print
fabrics, cut:

  • 216 squares, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in (Nine-patch blocks)

  • 52 squares, 3^1 ⁄ 4 in (third border).

3

From the moss green print fabric, cut:

  • Five strips, 1^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
width of the fabric (first border).

4

From the forest green star print
fabric, cut:

  • Five strips, 3^1 ⁄ 2 in across the width
    of the fabric (second border)

  • Six strips, 2^1 ⁄ 4 in across the width
    of the fabric (binding).

Nine-patch and
appliquéd blocks

5

Lay out nine 2^1 ⁄ 2 in squares of
assorted dark print fabrics in
three rows of three squares each.
Re-position the individual squares
until you are happy with the colour
placement. Sew the squares together
in rows, then sew the rows together
to form the Nine-patch block. See
Diagram 1. Make a total of 24 Nine-
patch blocks.

6

Trace each appliqué shape onto
the paper side of the fusible web,
leaving^1 ⁄ 2 in between shapes. You will
need to trace 15 outer flowers, 15
inner flowers, 15 flower centres, 15

stems and 30 leaves. Cut them out
about^1 ⁄ 4 in outside the traced lines.

7

Fuse the shapes to the wrong side
of the selected fabrics and cut
them out accurately on the lines.

8

Peel the backing paper from
each shape and, referring to the
photograph as a guide, place them
on the appliqué block backgrounds,
overlapping them where necessary and
leaving a^1 ⁄ 4 in seam allowance around
the edge of each block. Once you are
happy with the arrangement on each
block, fuse the shapes in place.

9

Using the light beige thread,
machine stitch around the
appliqué shapes with zigzag or
satin stitch.

Assembly

10

Referring to the Quilt Layout
Diagram, lay out the Nine-
patch blocks, the appliquéd blocks
and the setting triangles. Re-arrange
the blocks until you are happy with
the colour placement. Sew the blocks
and setting triangles together in
diagonal rows. Then sew the rows
together, carefully matching the
seams.

11

Use the last four setting
triangles for the corners: fold
each triangle in half and crease the
middle of its long (bias) edge. Match
the crease with the centre of the
Nine-patch block. The triangles will
be too large and will overhang at each
