Cutting

1

From the yarn-dyed cotton fabric, cut:

  • One strip, 14^11 ⁄ 2 in across the
width of the fabric. Crosscut it to
    yield two rectangles, 14^1 ⁄ 2 x17^1 ⁄ 2 in
    (bag front and back)

  • Four squares, 2in (handle end covers).

2

From the grey print fabric, cut:

  • One strip, 14^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
width of the fabric. Crosscut it
    to yield two rectangles, 14^1 ⁄ 2 x18^1 ⁄ 2 in
    (bag lining).

3

From the floral print fat quarter,
cut:

  • One rectangle, 9^1 ⁄ 2 x14^1 ⁄ 2 in (large
    pocket lining and trim)

  • One rectangle, 6^1 ⁄ 2 x7^1 ⁄ 2 in (small
    pocket lining and trim).

4

From the denim scrap, cut:

  • One rectangle, 4^1 ⁄ 2 x9^1 ⁄ 2 in
    (shine panel on large pocket).

5

From the yellow spot print
scrap, cut:

  • One rectangle, 4^1 ⁄ 2 x5^1 ⁄ 2 in
    (large pocket).

6

From the bag batting, cut:

  • Two rectangles, 18 x 15in.

7

From the cotton batting, cut:

  • One rectangle, 8^1 ⁄ 2 x14^1 ⁄ 2 in
    (large pocket).

Pockets

8

Trace or transfer the ‘shine’
design from the Pattern Sheet
onto the denim rectangle in the left
and bottom two-thirds of the area,
as shown in the photographs.

9

Thread the top of the sewing
machine with 12-weight cream
thread and fi t the embroidery foot to
give a good view of the design area.
Machine stitch the words slowly and
carefully. The vertical lines of the

‘shine’ word are given extra weight
by stitching three parallel rows of
stitching close together.

10

Select 14 assorted 2^1 ⁄ 2 in squares
and arrange them in two rows
of seven, mixing the prints in a
pleasing way. Change to the^1 ⁄ 4 in foot.
Sew the squares in each row together
and press the seams of one row to the
left and the other to the right. Join the
rows together, nesting the seams so
they match perfectly. Press. The panel
should measure 4^1 ⁄ 2 x14^1 ⁄ 2 in, raw
edge to raw edge.

11

Sew the yellow spot print
rectangle to the right edge
of the denim ‘shine’ panel and press
the seam away from the denim. The
panel should measure 4^1 ⁄ 2 x14^1 ⁄ 2 in,
raw edge to raw edge.

12

Join the squares panel to the
top of the ‘shine’ panel to
complete the large pocket rectangle.
It should measure 8^1 ⁄ 2 x14^1 ⁄ 2 in, raw
edge to raw edge.

13

Match the pocket rectangle
with the 9^1 ⁄ 2 x14^1 ⁄ 2 in rectangle
of fl oral print fabric along the long
edge of the squares panel, right
sides together. Stitch the seam.

14

Lay the pocket, right side
down, on the table with the
lining piece opened out. Position
the 8^1 ⁄ 2 x14^1 ⁄ 2 in rectangle of cotton
batting over the patchwork/pocket
rectangle (not the lining), then fold
the lining rectangle back over the
pocket so the lower long edges
match and there is about^1 ⁄ 2 in of
folded fl oral fabric above the seam
between the squares and the fl oral
fabric. Press the layers together,
then from the front, stitch in the
ditch below the fl oral trim to hold
it in place.

MINKI’S BATTING
TIP I recommend using a foam
bag batting rather than cotton
quilt batting for a more sturdy
bag shape.

MINKI’S DESIGN
TIP Always try to pay attention
to details so that they are not
overdone, but just give the right
amount of charm to a project.
