Australian House & Garden — June 2017

(Nora) #1

‘Imagine stepping out your back door and being immersed in nature.’ Phillip Withers

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT A grey-green
palette featuring highlights of bronze and
gold unifies the planting scheme. Clumps
of tall, slender grey-green Cleistocactus
strausii are grouped with timber sculptures
by Pop & Scott. Resembling a creature from
the deep, Euphorbia ‘Medusa’s Head’
spreads tentacle-like branches upwards;
behind it, grass trees (Xanthorrhoea
johnsonii) add sparks of lime green and
Aulux cancellata, a favourite of Phillip’s,
bears bronze tips. Bluestone stepping stones
feature Aboriginal symbols etched into
the surface using bush-hammering
techniques by indigenous students
from Warrnambool Clontarf Academy.
A striking cluster of flowering Ferocactus
(barrel-shaped cactus) contrasts with
grey-green tufts of Correa alba. >
