‘The green and white palette is calming... and helps create a sense of sanctuary.’ Helen Wellman

KEY PLANTS

Hydrangea ‘Diamond Rouge’
Stachys byzantina ‘Big Ears’
Philodendron scandens
(heartleaf philodendron)
Elettaria cardamomum
(true cardamom)
Philodendron ‘Lickety-Split‘
Phalaenopsis amabilis
(white orchid)
Euphorbia ‘Silver Swan’
Schinus molle (peppercorn tree)
Betula pendula (silver birch)
Adiantum raddianum

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT Hanging
like a delicate veil from the central arbour
are tendrils of Philodendron scandens, Hoya
carnosa (wax plant), Trachelospermum
jasminoides (star jasmine) and Epipremnum
aureum. White blooms of Hydrangea
‘Diamond Rouge’ cascade beside the stairs;
the pretty groundcover is Dichondra repens.
An otherwise simple structure, the arbour
was designed with a planting channel
extending around all sides at the top.
Water flowed gently from the arbour.
Niches in the feature wall of Moroccan
limestone were planted with maidenhair
fern and white orchids, opposite a row of
silver birches underplanted with Liriope
muscari and Clivia miniata. >
