The design approach Mint green tiles kept coming up in
conversation for the owners of this bathroom. “It’s a colour that was often used in
pre-war homes,” says Brooke. Plus, the family had also recently holidayed in Thailand
and fallen in love with a celadon-green tiled bathroom at their resort. In her research
into bathrooms of the period, Brooke noted that tiles were often used on the vanity
top. “That encouraged us to go with mosaic tiles instead of stone. It’s a contemporary
nod to the period of the home.” Another modern move was using a Trend product
from Sareen Stone to apply the shower wall’s mosaic. “It comes in 300mm sheets and
each piece is numbered to make creating the pattern an easy process for the tiler,”
says Brooke. A matching mosaic was selected for the bench and floor. Simple
semi-recessed white basins and white accessories break up the expanse of green. >

The brief “This ensuite was conceived as a
calm and meditative space – decorative and colourful
yet peaceful,” says architect Brooke Aitken, who designed
this bathroom as part of an extension to a 1920s
P&O-style home in Sydney. The bathroom has no view
because of privacy reasons, but the striking coloured-tile
choices more than make up for it.
