HOT 100

A contemporary art museum destined to rival the
Tate Modern in London and MoMA in New York
opens on Cape Town’s V&A waterfront in
September. The ambitious Zeitz Museum of
Contemporary Art Africa is the first of its kind
dedicated to contemporary African art. A 1921
elevator tower and surrounding storage silos have
been transformed during the three-year, 80-gallery
project. And occupying the top six floors is a new
hotel, The Silo, with 28 rooms, a spectacular rooftop
and magnificent views of Table Mountain.

THE ALCHEMIST
There’s no menu but there is house-made Campari
prepared à la minute before your very eyes with
angelica root, cochineal, tonka beans and other arcane
ingredients scooped from apothecary jars. It’s all part
of the magic of the bar Ben Fiddich in Shinjuku, where
bartender Hiroyasu Kayama deploys the mortar and
pestle as much as he does the shaker tin to craft
memorable cocktails. Soon you’ll be able to pull up
a stool at Kayama-san’s second bar, slated to open
by mid-year in the same building. Ben Fiddich,

PLUCK OF THE IRISH Niche? Certainly. But Irish wine is now a thing. Dublin’s Chapter One
restaurant lists barrique-aged cabernet merlot from a vineyard less than 25 kilometres away.
Leafy red fruits with a touch of caramel and good acidity is how sommelier Ed Joliffe describes
David Llewellyn’s 2014 Lusca, which reminds him of young Bordeaux out of barrel. “I’ve poured it
for Masters of Wine and other sommeliers who’ve eaten here and everyone has been pleasantly
surprised it’s actually drinkable,” says Joliffe. chapteronerestaurant.com

FOOT AND MOUTH
When you think of restaurants, the first thing that
comes to mind is probably not footwear. But no
one asked you, and apparently the footwear industry
is eager to jump on the food-is-the-new-hotness
bandwagon. This is especially true in Los Angeles,
where Australia’s own Volley has teamed up with
David Combes and Grant Smillie, the owners of West
Hollywood hotspot EP & LP, home to Australian chef
Louis Tikaram. The Volley x EP & LP sneaker aims
to “celebrate the Australian way of life”, as well as
work as functional attire for hospitality workers – it’s
lightweight, stylish, and the rubber sole provides a firm
grip. You’re going to have to go to LA to grab a pair,
though. The shoes are sold exclusively at the
restaurant for $US180. eplosangeles.com
