Haughey set up City Refrigeration in 1985, providing cooling
services to pubs. The Glasgow-based company saw its profits
slip to £13.5m on £463.1m sales in 2015. Haughey, 60, rejected a
£300m bid for the group in 2002, which we value at £225m. He
was knighted in 2012 for services to business and philanthropy
and elevated to the peerage a year later. 2016: £240m, 437=

PHILIP GABRIEL AND FAMILY
Property

The property empire created by Gabriel, 45, began in London
where he developed sites in Hackney, Dalston and other then
run-down areas. In 2005 he entered the Berlin market and has
built a portfolio of 130 freehold buildings, with about 4,500
apartments, shops and restaurants. His property has a net book
worth of £204m and we add £60m for profits in the past year.

Hedge fund

Australian Nathanson, 47 , once dreamt of playing international
cricket and these days he turns out for the north London club
Totteridge Millhillians. He worked for Goldman Sachs before he
created hedge fund Marble Bar Asset Management, making
£125m from its sale to a Swiss bank and then buying it back. The
operation showed £78.5m net assets in 2015. Nathanson also
founded Red Deer, an investment platform. 2016: £218m, 474

Hedge fund

Davies, 45 yesterday, was the best man at former chancellor
George Osborne’s wedding and manages the biggest fund at the
£14.5bn Lansdowne Partners along with Stuart Roden (qv). The
Mayfair-based operation made a £366.4m profit on £418.4m
turnover in 2015-16 when its partners scooped a £314m profit, up
from £191m the year before. 2016: £220m, 460=

Since 2014 Roden, 53, has been chairman of London hedge fund
Lansdowne Partners, which made £366.4m in 2015-16. The
partners, including Peter Davies (qv), and other backers shared a
£314m profit but the operation took a 15% hit in the year to
October 2016. Roden was one of the financiers behind the Kids
Company charity that collapsed in 2015. 2016: £220m, 460=

Frozen food

Frozen food specialist Iceland saw sales rise by 8.6% in the three
months to January this year. Dewsbury-born Walker, 71, founded
Iceland with a shop in Oswestry. Today it has an annual turnover
of at least £2.7bn with more than 880 UK outlets and dozens
more across Europe. In 2012 Walker and a group including
Tarsem Dhaliwal and Lord Kirkham (both qv) took control of the
Clwyd-based business in a £1.45bn buyout. 2016: £226m, 456

SURINDER ARORA AND FAMILY
Hotels

Arora, 58, is building two hotels at Heathrow, adding to the three
he owns at the airport. The Indian-born entrepreneur arrived in
Britain aged 14 unable to speak English. He started as a waiter,
put the family savings into property and eventually developed his
first hotel. Arora Hotels showed assets of £160.2m at the end of
2015-16 while his separate Arora Holdings added £97.8m more.

JOHN ROBERTS
Internet retailing

Former kitchen salesman Roberts, 43, started the online retailer
AO World after a £1 bet with a friend that he could change the
way white goods were sold. Today the company, whose chief
operating officer is Steve Caunce (qv), is valued at £742m.
Bolton-born Roberts sold £112m worth of shares at the 2014 float.
He and his wife, Sally, fund children’s charity AO Smile Foundation
and has pledged to give his entire fortune away as he wants his
children to make their own way in life. 2016: £260m, 403=

growing firms. It had profits of £17.9m on £95.9m sales in 2015
and with £62.1m assets is worth £250m. 2016: £125m, 799=

Pet food

Quinn, 59, made his pile selling posh pet food to Aussies through
VIP Petfoods, which offers a “Fussy Cat” range. After emigrating
in 1980, Aberdonian Quinn and his wife, Christina, 58, launched
the operation on the Gold Coast, selling it in 2015 for A$410m
(£250m today). Last year motoring enthusiast Quinn spent
£2.6m on an Aston Martin Vulcan supercar. 2016: £156m, 666=
