MARK BURNETT AND ROMA DOWNEY
Television

Essex-born Burnett can stake a claim to the US
president’s rise to power , having devised the
reality TV show The Apprentice where Donald
Trump magnified his fame. A Democrat donor in
elections gone by, during the presidential race
he said it was not within his power to release old
tapes of the show likely to embarrass Trump.
Burnett, 56, is a former paratrooper and
Falklands War veteran who arrived in Hollywood

more than 30 years ago with just $200 and
found work there as a nanny. He became
king of American reality TV, dreaming up
Survivor, Shark Tank and The Voice, while his
Londonderry-born actress wife, Downey, 57
yesterday, played Jackie Onassis in a mini series
and was behind a 10-part show called The Bible.
The MGM studio paid $343m in September
2014 for a 55% stake in the couple’s television

company and a few months later the pair
exchanged their remaining holding for more
than 1.3m MGM shares, now worth about
£100m. In December 2015 Burnett signed a
five-year contract as president of MGM
Television. Downey was named chief content
officer of the faith and family division. Past sale
proceeds and the MGM deal take the Malibu-
based couple to £390m. 2016: £375m, 298=
