sas,buthisloveofsportscausedhimtogive
upthatcalling.Afterretirement,heenjoyed
manyyearsasamemberoftheNorthern
VirginiaSeniorSoftballleague,servinga
termaspresident.
AftergraduatingfromFortHaysStateUni-
versity,heappliedtoworkattheCentral
IntelligenceAgency.Whilehewaitedseveral
monthsforhisbackgroundinvestigationto
becompleted,Bobworkedasabricklayerin
Arlington–helpingbuildmultiplebuildings.
Becauseofhisaptitudewithlanguages,
theAgencyinitiallyhiredBobasalinguist,
teachinghimPolishfromscratch.Soon,
however,Bobmovedovertotheoffice
wherehewouldspendtherestofhiscareer
–theForeignBroadcastInformationService
(FBIS).HeservedoverseasinAustria,En-
gland,andThailand.Hecompletedacourse
ofstudyattheNationalWarCollegein
Washington,DC.Hefinishedhiscareerserv-
ingasDirectorofFBISfor5years.Uponhis
retirementinFebruary1996,after 33 years
ofgovernmentservice,hewasawardedthe
DistinguishedIntelligenceMedalandthe
NationalIntelligenceDistinguishedService
Medal.
BobandBethcontinuedtotravelextensive-
lyintheirretirementyears,visitingdozens
ofcountriesinNorthandSouthAmerica,
theCaribbean,Europe,theMiddleEast,Afri-
ca,Asia,andOceania.Bob’sfinalofficialtally
ofdifferentcountriestowhichhehadtrav-
eledwas105.AsBoboftensaid,“Notbad
forafarmboyfromKansas.”
Bobwroteandpublishedtwobooks.The
firstbook,PortraitofaKansasFamily–The
SchreinersofHays,wasameticulouslyre-
searchedhistoryofhisownfamily’shistory
andgenealogy.His secondbook,FromKan-
sastoKenya–anUncommonRoadforWine
Lovers,wasamemoirofhisinternational
travels,focusingonthemanywineregions
oftheworldtowhichhehadtraveledinhis
lifetime.Healsokeptdetailed,wittyjournals
ofhismanytravels,andthosejournalsare
nowtreasuredfamilymementos.
Alifelongsportsfan,Bobwasanardent
supporterofhisbelovedBostonRedSox,
althoughhefoundroominhisheartto
alsocheerforlocalteams,theWashington
NationalsandBaltimoreOrioles.Similarly,
alifelongGreenBayPackersfan,Bobalso
cheeredfortheWashingtonRedskins–and
whoeverhappenedtobeplayingagainstthe
DallasCowboys.
Bobwasfiercelydevotedtohisfamily–both
immediateandextended.Afterthepassing
ofhisownparents,headeptlytookonthe
roleoffamilypatriarch.Hekeptincontact
withsiblings,in-laws,cousins,second-cous-
ins,aunts,uncles,nieces,nephews,children,
andgrandchildren–nomatterhowfar-flung
thefamilyhadbecome.Clearly,hisfavorite
rolewasthatofgrandfather,andhetookob-
viousjoyinwatchinghisgrandchildrengrow
andmature.

velopednationalpolicy.
HismedicalexperienceatMIEMSSledhim
toapositioninthefederalDepartment
ofHealthandHumanServicesasitsfirst
deputydirectoroftheOfficeofEmergen-
cyPreparednessandtheNationalDisaster
MedicalSystem(NDMS).Hewasoneofthe
