The bidding:

H

ere’s another deal in
which an atypical trump
suit — this time a tenuous
4-3 fit — offers North-South
their best chance to score
game.
North-South got to an
unlikely contract. South’s
first three bids suggested
a strong hand with six dia-
monds and four hearts.
South did well to bid the
heart game at his fourth
turn; a club opening lead
would have beaten 3NT by
one trick, and South would
have been down two at five
diamonds.
Against four hearts, West
led a low club: three, king,
ace. When trump control is
an issue, as at this contract,
declarer should attack his
side suit early. So South took
the ace of diamonds and
ruffed a diamond in dummy.
When both defenders fol-
lowed, South took the K-A of
trumps. He then started to
run the diamonds.
East ruffed the third
diamond, cashed his high
trump and led a club to
West’s queen, but declarer
ruffed the next club with
his last trump, finished the
diamonds and won the 13th
trick with the ace of spades.
Making four.
DAILY QUESTION
You hold:
♠ Q 4 ♥ Q J 9 6
♦ 9 8 ♣ K 10 7 6 2
The dealer, at your left,
opens one diamond. Your
partner doubles, you respond
one heart and he bids one
spade. The opponents pass.
What do you say?
ANSWER: If partner had an
average hand with spades,
he would have overcalled
one spade at his first turn.
By doubling before bidding
his suit, he promises extra
strength. Game is likely.
Show some strength by jump-
ing to three clubs.
