Just like

riding a bike

SOOOOOO, I WAS GOING TO
LEARN HOW TO ride a bike this
month. But every time I went to
book in for my adult learn-to-ride
lesson, something would stop me.
I felt nervous and uncomfortable.
I was basically being a big cry baby.
I had grand plans for this month’s
Ed’s Letter – we have a cycling special
in this issue after all (see page 70),
so how great would it have been to
be able to tell you guys that I finally
took my feet off the ground and rode
a real, proper, non-spin-class bike for
the very first time?! IT WOULD
HAVE BEEN AWESOME.
When it came time to write this
and I hadn’t done what I’d set out
to do, I was consumed by angst. I’d
backed down, and that is defs not
something I’m used to doing. I’m
normally filled with more gumption.
But here’s an undeniable fact
about fitness: We all surrender to
doubt and fear sometimes. It maybe
happened to you when you walked
into your first ever yoga class; it could
still be hanging around, unwelcome,
whenever you enter the weights room
of your gym; or like me, a long-
standing apprehension is holding you
back from tackling a challenge you
know is not that scary on a scale of
one to The Walking Dead.
If your own fitness confidence
needs a big ol’ boost in one niggling
area (or, just in general), let me

introduce part three of the WF
Confidence Project. The focus:
Fitness. The goal: To encourage you
to step out of your comfort zones,
smash it on the confidence scale in
your chosen activities and feel like
Wonder Woman on the fitness stage.
It starts with our feature “Beat
Gym-timidation” on page 26, but it
doesn’t stop there. We’re also inviting
you to become a part of our digital
fitness community – that would be
the WF Fit Tribe – with the chance to
win a training session with a superstar
athlete (aka one of our awesome
confidence coaches). Bury the nerves
and head to page 28 for details.
Ultimately, the biggest thing to
remember is, no matter the task we’re
attempting, everyone was a newbie at
that same thing at some point, right?
Let’s help each other break down the
barriers when it comes to mental
capability. We can do this. Surely it’s
just like riding a bike?

Enjoy the issue!

What I could look like
when I learn to ride!
