Embracing

the feminine
WITH MOTHER’S
DAY around the
corner, it seems
an apt time to be
celebrating all things
Shakti ... the divine
feminine. We all
embody elements of both feminine
and masculine, and as we begin to
move into Mother Nature’s more
nurturing seasons, there’s no better
time to celebrate this force within and
around us all.
A month ago I left the comfort of
home, and the domestically blissful
daily grind with my sister and
10-month-old nephew, to venture
to Bali and fill up my yoga cup with
studies and Bali Spirit Fest (more on
that in the next edition). This contrast
to my regular routine allowed me to
witness, through a Bali-inspired lens,
just how much I’ve dedicated myself
to the nurturing of others recently.
This very inherent desire to mother
had left me feeling a little depleted
and out of touch with my Self. I’m
sure most of you can relate to the
overwhelm we sometimes feel as a
result of taking care of everyone else
before ourselves, and the guilt if we
choose not to. But if there’s anything
I’m taking away from my experience
here, it’s that you must serve yourself
first. In doing so, you can feel joyfully
satiated, and easily begin to share
that joy with those around you —
which is so much more valuable to
them than your half-hearted attempts
at keeping everything flowing on
your wavering adrenaline.
In the creation of this Shakti-
inspired edition, I was fortunate to get
to know one of the most beautifully

feminine yogis out there, the ever-
inspiring and wise woman gracing
our cover, Shiva Rea (p.28-32), who
reminds us just how much yogic
knowledge there is to soak up. I am
constantly in awe of yoga’s magical
ability to propel me into the present.
Of course, it’s written in the texts, but
an understanding of the philosophies
isn’t necessary to experience the
benefits. Even if you only have a
moment, the practices on these pages
are laid out for your asana indulgence.
We’ve got poses to tune your chakras
(p.50), inquire within (p.64) and a
beautiful sequence with Shiva (p.29),
as well as a home practice to awaken
your sexual vitality (p.80). We’ve
explored some beautiful retreats and
trainings (Embodied Flow p.44 and an
Ayurvedic Escape p.60) and included
some wisdom especially for women
(Mindful Mothering p.48 and Hormone
Balancing p.88). Remember to browse
the Mother’s Day Gift Guide (p.26) for
some divine yogic goodies! Take
some time for yourself and enjoy the
offerings on these pages — they’re
just for you, beautiful goddess.
P.S. I’m going to be sharing some
workshops and events coming up
around Australia. Watch the AYJ
website and social media for updates,
as well as my personal accounts ...
