Letter of the month
Missing mum
Just received the latest copy of
The Australian Women’s Weekly,
flicked through and there it is, just
how I feel – “I have mourned the
mother I had” (Kiwi entrepreneur
Charlotte Devereux talking
about her mother’s battle with
Alzheimer’s). Sixteen years on
from losing my mum to breast
cancer, there I was right back
at the moment she told me, “Sharon, I have breast cancer.” It was on my birthday, and left me
numb with shock. My heart aches, my throat has closed over and the tears flow again.
It was that moment I lost the most valuable relationship in my life. She was still there, but our
lives changed for ever. Everything revolved around endless tests, treatment and waiting for the
next bombshell – “Unfortunately your cancer has metastasised into your bones; your cancer is
terminal.” I, and many others have also had these special relationships and memories snatched
away from us. Thanks Charlotte for sharing your story. SHARON FLANNERY

Pearl of wisdom
“For perfect flowers
put wet sand into your vases

  • flowers keep their
    arrangement and position
well, and the vase does not
    knock over very easily. Keep

Diana’s boys
How proud would Princess Diana have been
of the two beautiful young men she
produced? As I was reading your
story on Prince Harry and his
relationship with Meghan
Markle in the April issue, I
felt glad that the young
boy who lost his mum at
such a tender age has
found such happiness.
And that the royal
family – who were
so tough on Princess
Margaret in the 1950s
when she fell in love with
Peter Townsend – seem to
be doing the right thing and
welcoming her with open arms.
I wish Harry and his brother
William all the very best – those
boys deserve much happiness
after having to spend the past 20 years without
their darling, devoted mother. She would be
so proud of them both today – how they have

coped, how they have grown into lovely
young men, and William’s lovely
young family. And for all the
work they are doing raising
awareness of mental health
in the UK. Good on them!

Fabulous issue
WOW! You have
excelled yourself
with April’s issue.
The articles on the
royal family are really
great. The Duchess
of Cambridge – such
delightful photos and
capturing her lovely smile.
Prince Harry looks sooo happy.
The hot chocolate puddings recipe is
fantastic and so easy. My puddings rose well
above the ramekin sides with split tops.
Truly delicious!
